Enjoy the charm and playfulness of a roofed boat floating on Lake Biwa

Tokusa-no-ma (literally the ‘scouring rush room’) features a ceiling with a high center reminiscent of a boat’s hull, and a garden of horsetail ferns arranged like reeds by the water’s edge. The room was designed for guests to enjoy the experience of boating, and relax while taking in the sights of Shiga Prefecture’s Lake Biwa. The room features old wood pieces from actual pleasure boats, ranma (the wood-carved transom panels commonly seen overhead in Japanese style rooms) decorated with bush clover, bamboo partitions, and the rough-textured earthen walls, which provide a rustic charm. Whether bathed in sunlight or illuminated by standing lanterns, the view remains equally enchanting, and invites you into a scene of subtle, yet profound beauty.

The boat-hull ceiling is finished using two types of cedar in a striped formation, radiating a simple, rustic style. In the three-category system shin-gyō-sō (formal, neutral, and informal) used in traditional disciplines, this room is a prime example of , or the informal style.
